The old fart’s top news story of the day is about a trending social reality that’s called ‘social distancing’, which I think is a social disaster. Now according to the New York Times, social distancing is defined as maintaining distance between you and other people — in this case, at least six feet (1.83 meters). It also means minimizing contact with people, avoiding public transportation whenever possible, limiting nonessential travel, working from home, skipping social gatherings, and not going to crowded bars and sporting arenas.
Social Distancing Is Hollywood’s Flavor Of The Day
Recently social distancing has become Hollywood’s flavor of the day, with celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Brooks, Taylor Swift releasing videos extolling its virtues and how they are implementing it. But this grumpy assed old fart thinks that social distancing’s a horrible damn thing, one that will have a very significant negative impact on the psychology of people worldwide. I say that because human beings are social creatures who’ve used closeness and touch as forms of communication for a very long time. So limiting and/or eliminating touch and close human contact is bound to cause a social disconnect that the world has never seen before, and may never recover from again.
Thanks There Captain Obvious
Therefore, when I read comments like “Every single reduction in the number of contacts you have per day with relatives, with friends, co-workers, in school will have a significant impact on the ability of the virus to spread in the population,” stated by the chair of population health sciences at Georgia State University, Dr. Gerardo Chowell, I want to shout, “Gee, thanks there Captain Obvious!” As if people weren’t becoming introverted and isolated enough already! One would almost think there’s a degree of deliberacy in all this, which gives rise to a great many conspiracy theories.
United We Stand, Divided We Fall
However, regardless of who would stand to profit from the increased isolation caused by media fueled paranoia, whether government and/or industry, we cannot forget the wisdom of the ancient Greek storyteller, Aesop, who’s credited with first stating, “United we stand, divided we fall” in his fable “The Four Oxen and the Lion”. The more divided we become, whether from disease, racism, religion, sexual orientation, dental plans, or any one of a million other stupid excuses, the easier that we are to control. And the path that control of us takes us to, is guaranteed to be a very bad place indeed.
Exposure To Disease Builds Immunity To Disease
So, when people recommend ‘social distancing’, recommend that they hold pull their damn heads out of their asses, because it’s causing some right serious stinking thinking. I mean seriously, viruses live for millions of years, so do you really think you’re going to stay isolated from them your whole damn life? And, it’s our exposure to disease that builds our immunity to disease, so unless medical folks are intentionally trying to make the population even more vulnerable to disease, perhaps they need to move beyond their Coronavirus psychosis, and into the real world, which will go on no matter how many face masks and rolls of toilet paper are sold.
