As an old fart, life expectancy’s something frequently on my mind – for a couple of reasons. One, because I’m an old fart, and the second is the shocking numbers of people who are dying when they’re only from 50-75 years old. As a society we’re assured that the life expectancy of people is going up, so you’d think I’d be a happy old fart, but I’m not. You see, after doing a little digging, I found out that we’re being lied to.
Life Expectancy Now Getting Shorter Instead Of Longer
In turns out that in 1900 the life expectancy of folks in North America was 47.3 years; and by in 2017, it was 78.6. But, three data briefs published by the U.S. Center For Disease Control since then revealed that instead of the the average life expectancy in the United States increasing, it’s actually going down, with two highly avoidable causes responsible for much of the drop; deaths from drug overdose, and suicide.
The Number Of Deaths From Influenza And Pneumonia Rose More Than Any Other Leading Cause Of Death
The 10 leading causes of death had remained the same from 2016 to 2017: heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, chronic lower respiratory diseases, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, kidney disease, and suicide, with age-adjusted death rates increasing significantly for seven of the 10 causes. The percentage of deaths from influenza and pneumonia rose more than any other leading cause of death.
Suicide And Overdose Now Major Causes Of Death
At one time North Americans enjoyed living longer, healthier lives, which continued for much of the 20th century. Clean air and water, improved sanitation and refrigeration systems, public education, vaccines and life-saving drugs, and management of chronic diseases all added years to the average person’s lifespan, and virtually guaranteed that a child born on the continent would live longer than his or her parents. Now, slowly, those gains are being eaten away, and more and more older people are burying their children.
