Today’s top news story is about how hard farmers are being hit by the Coronavirus. First off, farmers have a special place in my heart because I grew up around and worked on farms through most of my childhood. It was a time when communities were surrounded by farms, unlike today, when farms are surrounded by communities. And those childhood experiences taught me that a ‘dumb farmer’ is an oxymoron (though dirt poor farmers sadly still remains accurate). It’s an oxymoron because every farmer I’ve ever known was incredibly brilliant, creative, and worked super hard. They are part mechanic, part horticulturalist, part meteorologist, part biologist, and the world’s biggest damn optimist.
Dumb Farmer Is An Oxymoron
They can weld, tan hides, build barns and plow. They fight time, weather, plight, crop prices, potential pollution and the government to survive year after year. They rise before the sun, and are still doing chores long after it sets. They are the people who lives depend on. Millions of lives. Billions of lives. And now they are being hit hard by a storm that they never saw coming. COVID has caused supply chains to buckle and break as restaurants, schools, public events either are purchasing far less, or they’ve stopped buying altogether.
Constantly On The Verge Of Failure
This has caused far more supply than demand, which drives prices ever downward. That’s tragic for farmers who have set costs to produce food. Once the price dips below what it costs them produce/raise, they loose money in one heck of a hurry. In a highly competitive world, where profit margins are slim enough to begin with, many farmers are constantly on the verge of losing everything because they’re financed to the hilt just to stay operational. One bad year can wipe some of them out. And tragically, it has even led to suicide.
Mom and Pop Farms Keep Prices Competitive
Now there are some who believe that if the mom and pop farmers can’t survive, well, that’s too bad, so sad. And they’re right, because without mom and pop farms to keep prices competitive, the corporate mega-farms can produce and charge whatever they want. That always leads to far higher prices for far less quality, and that’s truly ‘too bad, so sad’ for a whole lot of people. People who are blind to all but their own needs.
Why Is Food Being Wasted?
And there’s something else this farm crushing disease brings up, and that is what’s happening to all of the food suddenly not being used? There’s millions of tons of products with short shelf lives that should be being given away, but instead, perishable products like milk are “just getting dumped”. Do they not know there are poor folks who would love to have what is being thrown away? Why is there no public call to use the wasted food to feed the hungry?
Please Pray For Our Farmers
You see, if there is one thing farmers dislike almost more than any other, it’s seeing all of their hard being wasted, and right now so much of it is tragically headed to the dump instead of being put to good use. So, for those with such inclinations, please pray for our farmers, because they sure enough need all the help they can get in the trying days at hand. They pay more than they should, make less than they need, and work way beyond what is normal, all to keep us alive. And all while being unseen, unheard, and uncared about.
Farmers: The Forgotten Pipeline Victims
As government prepares to financially bail out foreign fossil fuel corporations with horrendous amounts of Canadian taxpayer money, Canadian farmers and their families have less and less land available to farm (fossil fuel extraction and use tragically destroys more land by the day), they try to cope with rising costs, and receive NO political support. Now suddenly they have are fewer markets. But instead of government investing in and protecting food production, which is most certainly in the nation’s best interest, it protects the people destroying the nation, then bullshits the citizens into believing that the foreign corporate destruction of Canada is in their best interest.
Farmers Are The Backbone Of Our Nation
Farmers are our unsung heroes, for they keep us all alive. They are the backbone of our nation, and the future of the world. So perhaps instead of government bailing out foreign owned and operated fossil fuel corporations strip mining Canada to kill the world for profit, how about bailing out our farmers, who are literally keeping all of mankind alive? Oh, and if you question which is actually the most important to the nation’s economy – fossil fuels or foods – for lunch today may this old fart recommend a nice warm bowl of oil with an open-faced sludge sandwich, served with a tall glass of ice cold gas, and for dessert a large lump of coal a la mode?
