The old fart’s top news story today is the collapse of a hotel in China being used to quarantine those infected with Coronavirus. Now this old fart has heard a whole belly full of stories of building collapses, and they’re happening all around the world. Some are due to geologic events, but most are to due to greed, corruption, and governmental incompetence. Greed that motivates people to ‘cut costs’, corruption that turns blind eyes, and governments too busy trying to control people to control construction standards. So the collapse of buildings isn’t anything new, but the collapse of new buildings is. And the result is that now people are now dying form the Coronavirus who didn’t even have the disease.
People Are Dying From The Coronavirus Without Being Infected
Case in point: State media say that a five-story Xinjia Hotel in the southern province of Fujian collapsed while it was being used as a quarantine facility to monitor people who’d had close contact with Coronavirus patients. It’s reported that 58 of the 71 people in the building were under quarantine. I mean, just when them poor quarantined folks got to thinking that the worse thing that could happen was to find out they’re infected, their whole world literally collapsed. Seventy-one people were in the building when it failed. Dozens have been rescued, but authorities say that at least 10 people are dead and 23 remain missing. Rescue workers continue to search the rubble.
10 Dead 23 Missing
Officials say it’s not clear what caused the collapse on Saturday evening, but this old fart knows damn well that because there were no major earthquakes at that time, it was shoddy building materials and practices that were to blame. You see economic and material availability once dictated building construction, but as more people died under rubble, governments developed stringent building standards and codes. However, far too often envelopes of cash are slipped from one hand to another, and the people who should be inspecting material and construction quality are checking the bosom and bottom quality of a bar maid in Tahiti instead.
Despite Stringent Building Standards And Codes
The result was the collapse of a five story, 80 room hotel that had just bloody opened in 2018! And, while it’s reported that the building’s first floor had been undergoing renovation since before the Lunar New Year, unless some dumb ass removed a shit whack of the load bearing walls, there ain’t no damn way that darn hotel should have spontaneously collapsed. The official Xinhua news agency said police summoned the building’s owner, who by now is no doubt summoning a few folks too.
Buildings Toppling Down As Gravestones Going Up
I can only begin to imagine the horror of being buried alive, and hope never to know it firsthand. But I also do not have unrealistic expectations. So while this old fart hopes the tragic collapse serves as a wake-up call, I ain’t expecting too much to be done, other than a whack of finger pointing and name calling, which I can guarantee you ain’t what the victims or their families wish would happen. Now I guess that as long as people exist, people who take advantage of people will exist, so as more and more of the old world craftsmen grow old and die, this old farts expects to see a lot more buildings come toppling down and gravestones going up.
